Oh, for GOD'S SAKE...

Next season, Cookie Monster will start telling kids that cookies are "a sometime food."

I can't put into words exactly why this pisses me off so badly, but JESUS, what a victory for the goddamned Nanny State.

On the one hand, eesh.

On the other hand, it's preferable to the heavyhanded routines where Cookie extols the virtues of produce, at length, repeatedly, in song. 'Cause, for fuck's sake, who is he fooling?

Exactly.

It's wrong. It's like having Keith Richards do a "Rock Against Drugs" commercial.

So how could they have done this better?

As a mom, I can see why they're trying to influence kids that cookies are "a sometime food". Childhood obesity is on the rise, and left unchecked, little kids would rather eat cookies than healthy food. However, they could use the other characters on the show to try and drive this point home to Cookie Monster. This would still give them the "message" while not changing the Cookie Monster we all grew up with.

Next thing you know, they're going to put Oscar the Grouch through Diversity Training. :: groans ::

And another thing. :)

While I agree it is the parent's responsibility to teach the children good eating habits vs. bad eating habits, you cannot argue that little children do not "role model" after what they see on television. I do not believe that parents should use the kids tv shows to do this job for them, but they can be a tool to reinforce what you are already teaching.

Ok...my .02 is done now. :)

My Sesame Street Role Model was Oscar the Grouch. (My room has never been clean except against my will. I played in mud puddles, too.)

There's also the alternative of showing Cookie Monster gaining weight... O:/

Cookie's already pretty fat as Muppet monsters go. And he has the whole chin thing, the floppy arm thing...

I loved Oscar too. Oscar and Bert. Mom liked Ernie and Grover. This probably explains everything.

But they could go farther! ROUND Cookie Monster!

Further. Bad fingers, bad.

"This is Wile E. Coyote reminding you that rockets are a sometimes toy."

While I agree with you that some of the things children see on TV model behavior, I don't recall personally ever thinking that engorging myself on cookies was ethical behavior.

Besides, as a muppet, he can't swallow. So he's modelling breaking cookies up in your mouth and spitting them out. :)

Exactly - he's a role model for bulimia, not unbridled gluttony.

Now you've ruined Cookie Monster :(

I will forever consider him to have an eating disorder!

I figure that as long as they're going to ruin him anyway, I might as well say that where folks can read it.

Does this mean he will only be a sometimes monster?

Errf.

Yeah, I dunno. Can't put my finger on it, but that kinda rubs me the wrong way, too. I mean...it's COOKIE MONSTER. The point was that cookies made him sort of irrational and crazy. His insanity over the cookie was already enough of a warning, ya know?
