Tragic Love Stories...
Jan. 23rd, 2001 12:19 amThe best love stories always seem to be the tragedies.
Like "Casablanca" - does anybody believe that this would be even a fraction as brilliant if Humphrey Bogart hadn't had to give up Ingrid Bergman at the end?
And if Romeo had wound up living happily ever after with Juliet, would their story still be retold so often, in so many ways? I just can't see it.
In "Babylon 5," Marcus' love for Ivanova would never have been half so poignant if he had been able to tell her exactly how he felt before he was dying to save her.
And now, there's "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon," with three tragic romances (although with one of them, we only see the aftermath of it going wrong.) Any one of the three could make it a great movie, but the way all three are interwoven raise this movie to brilliance. I picked up the soundtrack to this one tonight (and if you haven't seen it yet, SHAME ON YOU!) And it had the words to the song that plays as the closing credits roll, which I had to share.
A LOVE BEFORE TIME
If the sky opened up for me,
And the mountains disappeared,
If the seas ran dry, turned to dust
And the sun refused to rise
I would still find my way,
By the light I see in your eyes.
The world I knew fades away
But you stay.
As the earth reclaims its due,
And the cycle starts anew,
We'll stay, always
In the love that we have
Shared before time.
If the years take away
Every memory that I have
I would still know the way
That would lead me to your side.
The North star may die
But the light that I see in your eyes
Will burn there always
Lit by the love we have
Shared before time.
When the forest turns to jade,
And the stories that we've made
Dissolve away
One shining light will still remain.
When we shed our earthly skin,
And when our real life begins,
There'll be no shame
Just the love that we have made before time.
Someday, the gods willing, I am going to find somebody that this can be the "Our Song" for...
