Senator Says Lifetime Terror Detentions 'Bad Idea'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A reported U.S. plan to keep some suspected terrorists imprisoned for a lifetime even if the government lacks evidence to charge them in courts was swiftly condemned on Sunday as a "bad idea" by a leading Republican senator.

The Pentagon (news - web sites) and the CIA (news - web sites) have asked the White House to decide on a more permanent approach for those it was unwilling to set free or turn over to U.S. or foreign courts, the Washington Post said in a report that cited intelligence, defense and diplomatic officials.

Some detentions could potentially last a lifetime, the newspaper said.

According to what I have heard, the reason why people in the South eat Blackeyed peas on January 1st traces back to the Civil War. Or more specifically, to the latter days of it, when Sherman was marching through, and his troops were destroying as much as they could manage. Especially sources of food.

Except, so the story goes, that they did not know that Blackeyed peas were usable as food for people. So they didn't destroy that, which meant that in many places, they were the only thing that anybody has to avoid starvation.

So I try to get some Blackeyed peas in the first few days of every year, as an observation of the fact that the bastards haven't taken me out yet.

So like I said, Blackeyed Pea felicitations.
