Yes, *that* Steven Brust. The same Steven Brust who wrote Jhereg, To Reign In Hell, Taltos, and many others. How do I know this, you may or may not be asking yourself at this point?
I attended ConDFW (http://www.condfw.org) this weekend, one of the highlights of which was the chance to hang out with the guests of honor at the hotel bar. Brust sang a number of songs while I was sitting in the group of people around him on both Friday and Saturday nights, and acquitted himself quite admirably both times.
This afternoon, I got to have a brief discussion with John Steakley at the bar following a panel where he read the first three chapters of a work in progress. I can't tell you that much about it, because I kept falling asleep. Not because of any shortcomings in either the material (what I heard was fascinating,) or his delivery (if you get the chance to hear him speak, find a way to take it.) It was because having him read his fiction to you while you're sitting in a panel audience is like having your dad read to you at bedtime. It was just too relaxing an experience. When he read a few Op-Ed columns he'd written, however, I was awake, alert, and glued to every word, and I applauded each of them. While I didn't agree with all his opinions, he expressed them well, and in a way that makes you think. So when the chance came my way afterward, I thanked him for coming to the con, and for sharing what he'd written with us.
I also got to spend time with Robert Asprin, both on Saturday afternoon when I talked to him and Jody Lynn Nye about pets, and this evening when the convention gradually shrank to being about eight people that hadn't left the hotel yet. And on the way out, Robert Asprin offered to shake my hand. To say that I am stoked by this is an understatement. :) It's always gratifying when you get a chance to meet somebody whose work you've enjoyed, and you manage to not turn into a drooling idiot.
I also got to watch a number of the female attendees practice belly dancing in the con suite on Saturday evening, and then get my picture taken with them as they were setting up in the area by the dealers' room for their performance that night.
It was a hell of a great convention, and I look forward to when it rolls into town next year.
