"No one dies tonight."
For most of Bruce's adult life, those have been the first four words he's spoken upon waking.
All too often, they're ringing hollow in his ears by the time he's returned to the cave. He's only one man, after all, and there's only so much one man can do.
This much, however, he thinks to himself as he signs the last of the papers, this I can do.
The man who gets the job offer from Wayne Enterprises' Chicago facility the next day, representing (among other things) a substantial raise in salary, doesn't question his luck. It's just what he and his wife need to offset the expenses the baby brought with her, and it'll get them away from all the costumed freaks. Within a month, they're gone to a better, safer place.
With the resources Bruce had at his disposal, hacking the adoption agency's records was ridiculously easy, as was pulling together all the personal records of the couple who adopted Stephanie's baby. And once they checked out, it was just a matter of dropping the right words in the right ears to get the daughter away from the city that killed her mother.
The younger Robin, at least, deserved the chance to escape her mother was denied.
