I Got This From wil Wheaton's Blog
Dec. 4th, 2008 10:55 pmIf you haven't read the tribute to a woman named Abby at "Dances with Penguins", please go and do so: http://firefox.org/news/articles/2296/1/Dances-With-Penguins/Page1.html
I can't possibly remember all the friendships I've made due to shared fandoms over the years, so I won't even try. But reading that made me start thinking about all the people who've been brought into my life by our shared love of something. Some of them I haven't seen or spoken to in too goddamn long. Others, I don't mind that we've parted, but so it goes; there's always a few that are best left in the past, although if you're lucky, even they brought something good to your life before drifting away from it. And then there's the ones that stay with you over the years.
I met my ex-wife through a game on a system called US Videotel, back in 92. The best man at our wedding, I ran into one day some years before at junior college, where we gamed together. Another very dear friend, I met in a bookstore when he saw me flipping through a Marvel Superheroes sourcebook, and we started talking about various PCs we'd made in various systems (he asked me to be his best man for both his weddings, and I've advised him that if he ever is inclined to do so again, he should take that as a sign to run away from the woman in question as fast as he can - but I digress). A friend I made on the same system where I met my ex introduced me to Whiote Wolf, and ye gods but I've met so many people thanks to that... I have been so goddamned lucky in meeting some of you.
I like to act the cynical bastard - and I can be - but as I get older, I find myself getting overwhelmed with sentimentality about so much. I'm still tearing up, a good ten minutes after I finished reading the article, annd likely to stay that way for awhile. So I'll stop rambling now, but thank you for taking the time to read this.
And those of you I've interacted with, whether just online or off, thank you for being part of my life.
