Sucker Punch
Mar. 26th, 2011 08:25 pmThis is Zack Snyder's most ambitious movie. He succeeded.
The comic Paul posted wasn't entirely off base in its description, but there's more to the movie than just pretty girls, violence, and explosions. Sucker Punch is about Baby Doll (real name never given), whose stepfather gets her committed to an asylum after her mother's death. In order to deal with the horrors of what her stepfather and certain of the asykum's staff have done to her, she retreats into her imagination, and then when that becomes too much to bear, she retreats further still. In many ways this is like Inception, only with even more gunfire and even more utterly fantastic elements thrown into the layers of dream Baby Doll explores.
I won't spoil the ending, but I will say this: if you pay close enough attention you'll see it coming. I guessed part of it, and spent the rest of the movie expecting to be proven wrong. I was pleasantly surprised when that didn't happen. See it in the theatre in order to get the full impact of the spectacle that drives the story, and take somebody with you so that you can talk about it afterward.
