(With all due apologies to Neil Gaiman for barely bothering to file the serial numbers off his title.)

There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the center of her forehead.

She was taken to a place
That seemed quite lovely at first,
But it turned out to be very horrid.

When she was a child, she loved playing the violin.

But she hated practicing it.

She simply didn't see why she had to spend time practicing, when she could just pick up the thing and play it. So one night, after she'd lost a tooth, a beautiful lady appeared at the foot of her bed, and said that she was the Tooth Fairy, and that if she wanted, she could go to a place where she would never have to practice, ever again. So of course she said yes - who wouldn't?

Anybody who knew what lay ahead, you're probably thinking to yourself. And you'd be right to think that. But she was too busy looking forward to a chance to do nothing but play, and never have to do the boring bits, even to notice the Thorns tearing at her as she was taken away to the corner of Fairyland that belonged to the Tooth Fairy. And she spent most of the rest of the night and the next day doing exactly that.

Then the Tooth Fairy entered her room, and said that she was going to get to play for her. The Tooth Fairy took her into her throneroom, in whose center sat a chair that looked eerily familiar. After a few moments' thought, she realised that it was a Dentist's Chair - almost. A real Dentist's chair would not have had the straps, and she was pretty sure that some of the tools at the side of this chair wouldn't have been there in an actual Dentist's office. Those that would be there wouldn't have quite so much rust . . . or whatever it was, exactly, that clung to them, as could be found here, she was certain.

"One of the boys living here has been bad," the Tooth Fairy said to her, "and must be punished. But there's no reason why even punishment can't be pleasant, don't you think? I want you to play something that sounds nice. Just don't miss a note, or hit a sour one," the Tooth Fairy added, her smile no longer quite so nice.

So of course she missed a note.

Which is why she got to be in the chair next.

Just like all the times that followed, as well.

She eventually managed to escape. She makes her way through the streets of the city that serves as her current refuge, earning her living on the street by playing her violin.

And she makes sure that her teeth are in perfect condition.
