Standard rule is you put your music player on random, and pick your favorite lines from the first 25 songs that pop up. Right now I have too many songs by the same artists on my mp3 player to do a legit 25, so I give you 23. Your part is to reply with what song they're from, and whom it is you think recorded it.

Some of these may seem deceptively simple. Some, you may have no idea about. I'm mean that way.

01. I think I lost myself/ When I lost my motivation

02. Who would have guessed, her family crest/ I suddenly spy, tattooed on her thigh

03. I'm free of my innocence, falling too far/ I'm helpless to change, and hopelessly lost

04. Something inside me was seeking itself/ As I ran from a shadow who'd stolen my face After the Fall: The October Project

05. She's not even half the girl she . . . ow. Alive: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Once More With Feeling)

06. Until it ends/ There is no end All Through the Night: Cyndi Lauper

07. Am I the habit you're too tired to break?/ I want you to love me with every step you take Closer to Me: Dar Williams

09. But you never get away/ No you never get away from the burning-hearted

10. I was yours, and you were mine/ Forget it all Found Out About You: The Gin Blossoms

11. No, you can't take it, no, no, you can't take it/ No, you can't take that away from me Head Like A Hole: Devo

12. Like the poison in her arm/ Like a whisper she was gone Hope, Vol. 2: Apocalyptica

13. To taste your sweet kisses, your arms open wide/ This fever for you is just burning me up inside

14. And so I asked the light of the day/ "What's this rush for Heaven?" I Saw A Bird Fly Away: Dar Williams

15. Pocket full of poses/ You still can't touch my roses

16. I ask myself, "How much do you/ Commit yourself?" It's My Life: Talk Talk

17. And what's with all the carrots?/ What do they need such good eyesight for anyway? I've Got A Theory: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Once More With Feeling)

18. I can't feel much hope for anything/ If I'm not there to catch you if you fall Something's Always Wrong: Toad the Wet Sprocket

19. Something inside me/ Beckons and guides me/ To serenity's embrace

20. I just want to feel a real pleasure/ All that glitters is not gold

21. They Knew we were lying, but they smiled just the same/ It seemed they'd already forgotten we came Walk On the Ocean: Toad the Wet Sprocket

22. Chase down Mister Hinkydink/ So no trace can be found

23. I've tried and tried to capture you/ What more can one mere mortal do?

Shear's a surprisingly good singer songwriter. His "Horse of a Different Color" (a greatest hits package) is a good starting point...

Number two is taunting me terribly. I know the song, but my mental iTunes aren't shuffling fast enough to name it. Be back as soon as I get there. ;)

I would at least have expected someone to have said No Doubt...

I'm too old to say No Doubt. Or at least, I'd expect to get mocked along the lines of, "Oh, No Doubt, is it? Perhaps you weren't aware that the song's been around for years?" But maybe that's just the fact that hanging out with the circle of people I knew in high school was like being in High Fidelity, with the music snobbery, and I've never recovered.
