FEMA set up sixteen Points of Distribution for food, water and such in preparation for Ike hitting Houston.

None of which it actually staffed.

JAYSISFECK.

Does it count as "cynical" when you KNOW that the canine has been seriously buggered?

It's shorter than "My Cynicism Has Been Further Justified", at least.

Ok, clarification. HOUSTON set up the points of distribution or PODS for short. Fema, at first just dropped stuff at the Reliant Center and said "we've done the job." Then Mayor Bill White (who is a true hero here) told FEMA that "fine, you don't care about this, we're going to handle it." He made a few phone calls and got fleets of trucks and volunteers from churches and the community to turn out and hand out everything.

The damned EPA decided to say that we didn't have a gas shortage in Texas so we couldn't have gasoline shipments over state lines. No, we may have more gas but we don't have ELECTRICITY to pump or run trucks. Getting it from out of state is necessary. And again, the mayor and governor went to bat. Especially the mayor. We started getting gasoline. Granted, Bruce sat in a gas line for almost 5 hours to get it but we got it.

The thing is, Houston hasn't waited for the feds. We got the stuff, we get told no and then the mayor said "fine, we'll handle it" and we did. Self reliant.

FEMA has a bad name here.

Looks like the Republican's "tough love" philosophy is working! (he said sarcastically...)

You'd think Texas would get better treatment... I suppose since Bush doesn't need any more re-electing, there's no favoritism... O:p

Ah, I stand corrected - I based my post on the report I heard on the radio. I also heard that one man who'd gone to Houston to volunteer wound up running the post he'd reported to...

The federal government used to be able to handle this sort of thing - god help us if we wind up with another GOP administration.

FEMA, needs to be replaced!

What a mess. This is ludicrous. After the fuckup of the century, you'd think we'd have better plans in place...

I wish X-Files was still on. I'd LOVE to see Mulder's take on Katrina. 8-)
